Yorishiro are objects, including trees, that attract or are inhabited by spirits. These are often marked with shimenawa, ropes of rice straw or hemp, and shide, zigzag paper streamers. Here, both adorn a tree on the grounds of Fushimi Inari Taisha in Kyoto.
